Wenger Eyeing Another Spaniard

Spain’s winning Euro 2008 squad is blessed with an abundance of midfield talent such as Xavi, Andres Iniesta, Xabi Alonso, Santi Carzola, Marco Senna and Cesc Fabregas. However, there was another young starlet in the squad who is currently interesting by Arsenal's top man Arsene Wenger. That player is Real Madrid’s Ruben de la Red.

The 23-year-old has come through the youth ranks of the Spanish champions but has only recently made a name for himself after a season on loan at Getafe under Michael Laudrup’s guidance. De la Red has only made 10 first team League appearances for Real Madrid (all as sub) but such was his performances for Getafe last season that he is now hot property. His club have recalled the player into their first team squad for next season but with such competition for places at the Bernabeu he is unlikely to get much playing time. After all, Guti, Gago, Diarra and Javi Garcia are currently blocking his first team route.

De La Red’s performances for Getafe last season led to him winning 2 senior caps for Spain against both Peru and the U.S.A as well as a place in the multi-talented Euro 2008 squad. The midfielder also played in Spain’s final group match scoring in the 2-1 win over Greece. His displays in his club’s cup runs last season catapulted him into the public eye as Getafe reached the Copa Del Rey final as well as the quarter-finals of the Uefa Cup where they were beaten on away goals by eventual losing finalists Bayern. Unfortunately De la Red was sent-off after just 6 minutes of the 2nd leg 3-3 draw whilst playing in an unfamiliar centre-half role.

The 23-year-old is a technically gifted, hard working playmaker who enjoys a tackle. He was booked 11 times last season as well as given a single red card. He played in 31 League games for Getafe in the last campaign. He also scored in his club’s 2-1 Uefa Cup group win over Spurs at White Hart Lane.

Would he become the best partnership alongside Fabregas at the Emirates Stadium? Wenger should consider another Spaniards to get into his squad next season instead of rumours of David Villa, David Silva, Marcos Senna and David Guiza. Will De La Red be the man?
